Shakes at idle and stalls at a stop

A recognisable cluster in the owner-complaint record for this generation: the engine vibrates at a standstill, the tachometer needle sinks towards zero as though the engine is about to die, and it either catches itself or stalls and restarts without drama. The useful part of those filings is what happened next. One owner had the dealer change plugs and cables and was told to use premium fuel; the vibration was back within a week. Another had the idle speed control replaced after repeated stalling and kept filing. Nobody in the cited set reports the fault being cured on the first attempt — which says the symptom has more than one cause, and that parts-swapping in the dark is expensive. The triage is drive-gently-repair-soon rather than drive-normally for one reason: an engine that stalls unpredictably will eventually do it pulling into traffic. Get the codes read before anybody sells you an ignition service.

Symptoms

  • The engine shakes at idle and feels as if it is about to die
  • The tachometer needle sinks towards zero and then recovers
  • It stalls at a stop and then restarts normally
  • The check engine light comes on, often with a misfire code stored

Likely causes

  1. The idle air control passage is dirty or the control itself is failing
  2. There is a vacuum leak at the intake or one of its hoses
  3. Plugs, coils or leads are worn out
  4. Fuel delivery is restricted at the filter, the pump or the injectors

Diagnostic steps

  1. Read the stored codes and write them down before anything is replacedPoints toPlugs, coils or leads are worn out · Fuel delivery is restricted at the filter, the pump or the injectors
  2. Note whether it only misbehaves at idle or also under load at road speedPoints toThe idle air control passage is dirty or the control itself is failing · There is a vacuum leak at the intake or one of its hosesRules outFuel delivery is restricted at the filter, the pump or the injectors
  3. Smoke test the intake, or listen around it with the engine idlingPoints toThere is a vacuum leak at the intake or one of its hoses
  4. Clean the throttle body and the idle air passage and see whether the idle settlesPoints toThe idle air control passage is dirty or the control itself is failing
  5. Establish how old the plugs, coils and leads are, by receipt rather than by lookingPoints toPlugs, coils or leads are worn out

Fix paths

Clean before you replace

$Difficulty 2/5

The cheapest test that is also a repair. If the idle settles and stays settled for a week, you have your answer without buying a control unit.

Renew the ignition service items

$$Difficulty 2/5

Worth doing on age alone if nobody can produce a receipt, but do it because the codes point there, not as a first guess.

Find and close the vacuum leak

$–$$Difficulty 3/5

On the larger V6 this can lead back to the variable intake assembly, which has its own entry. Follow the leak rather than assuming.

Service the fuel side and measure delivery

$$Difficulty 3/5

Last on the list because it is the most invasive, but an engine starved of fuel and one running on bad fuel feel similar from the driver's seat.
