Knock and creak from the top of the front strut
The mount at the top of each front strut carries the whole corner and lets the strut rotate with the steering, and it is the noise nobody attributes correctly. Because it lives under the hood rather than under the truck, a knock from here reads to most people as a suspension problem down at the wheel, and the parts that get replaced first are usually the wrong ones. The supplier who stocks the replacement is realistic about it: the factory metal top hats can usually be reused when other strut components are changed, and it is the rusty or broken ones that need replacing. That is the whole diagnosis in one sentence, and it takes opening the hood to make. In a wet climate with salt-free but constantly damp air, corrosion at the strut top is worth a look every time the hood is up for anything else.

Symptoms
- A knock that seems to come from up under the hood rather than down at the wheel
- A creak or groan when the steering is turned at a standstill
- Visible rust or a cracked mount at the strut top with the hood open
- The steering feels notchy or sticky at parking speed
Likely causes
- The strut top mount is corroded or broken
- The upper strut bushing has perished
- The dust boot has split and the damper has worn as a result
Diagnostic steps

Fix paths
Reuse sound top hats, replace the bushings
$$Difficulty 4/5
The supplier's own default. If the metal is sound there is no reason to buy it twice, and the bushings are the part that actually wears.
Partsgen3-front-strut-bushing-kit
Replace the top hats and the bushings together
$$–$$$Difficulty 4/5
The answer once the metal is rusty or broken. The spring has to come off either way, so doing both at once is one visit rather than two.
Partsgen3-strut-top-hatgen3-front-strut-bushing-kit
Rebuild the whole strut
$$$Difficulty 5/5
Worth costing out on a high-mileage truck, because the labour is identical and a tired damper is already in there. Compressing a coil spring is genuinely dangerous work; this is the point at which a shop earns its money.
