Rear axle shaft creeping out of the differential
Australian-market owners describe this one in detail: a shaft works its way partway out of the rear differential, gear oil escapes past it, and the first sign is usually the smell and a stain rather than a noise. Mitsubishi Australia issued a field service notice rather than a recall — meaning the revised companion shafts, fitted with heavier retaining circlips, are supplied when a shaft actually fails rather than pre-emptively. One dealer in the thread had seen enough of them for the count to be worth quoting — it is in the citation — and a second owner in the same thread was one of that dealer's cases. The reported pattern is towing heavy loads, a lift, or both. A healthy shaft has a few millimetres of movement at the differential; a failing one moves in and out to the limit of the constant-velocity joints, and that difference is the test. Read the tier on this entry before you act on it: everything here comes from one forum thread, which is why it is filed as an owner account rather than as settled community knowledge. It is scoped as do-not-drive for the component rather than for the driver — nobody gets hurt, but a differential run without oil stops being a shaft-and-seal job and starts being a differential.

Symptoms
- The distinct smell of gear oil, and a stain around the shaft where it enters the differential
- Oil thrown along the back of the vehicle, or onto whatever is being towed
- The shaft slides in and out at the differential instead of holding still
- It appeared on a trip with a heavy load behind, or on a lifted truck
Likely causes
- The retaining circlip on the companion shaft is not holding the shaft in
- The seal at the shaft has hardened and is passing oil
- The differential has already been damaged by running low on oil
Diagnostic steps

Fix paths
Push the shaft back in to get somewhere safe
$Difficulty 2/5
Owners in the thread describe levering the shaft back towards the differential using an inner joint bolt. It is a way to stop the bleeding, not a repair, and the oil level still has to be right before the truck moves.
Fit the revised companion shafts
20 min$$$Difficulty 3/5
Order them by the name the manufacturer uses — companion shaft — because an ordinary rear shaft is not the revised part. The revised parts carry heavier retaining circlips. Owners report the change itself as quick once the parts are in hand; the cost is in the shafts, not the labour.

Rebuild or replace the differential
$$$$Difficulty 5/5
What is left if the truck was driven far with the oil gone. Before authorising it, ask exactly which bearings a quote covers — the thread's own scepticism about a cheap 'bearings replaced' invoice is worth borrowing.
