Carbon in the inlet and the EGR valve
Exhaust gas recirculation sends a measured amount of exhaust back into the inlet to lower combustion temperature. Soot in that exhaust meets oil mist in the inlet, and over enough short cold journeys the two build a hard deposit that narrows the manifold and can hold the valve off its seat. The result is a truck that hesitates, idles roughly and no longer answers the throttle the way it used to. The cited source names this on both the third and fourth generations; it is one source and the entry is tiered accordingly. The honest framing is that this is a wear-and-use problem rather than a defect: a truck that does long runs at load rarely gets there, and a truck used for short urban trips gets there sooner. Nothing about it makes the truck unsafe, which is why the triage says drive normally — but it will cost you fuel and throttle response until it is cleaned, and a valve stuck open will keep dumping soot into the inlet you just paid to clean.

Provisional matchMatched on generation, market, year and engine only. Entries marked provisional also depend on something you have not told us, so some of them will not fit your truck. Narrowing your selection removes the mark.
Anecdotal. This entry is not backed by factory documentation — treat its values and steps as a starting point, not as if they came from the factory manual.

Symptoms
- It hesitates for a beat when you ask for throttle
- The idle is rough or uneven, especially cold
- The truck feels flat and slow to respond compared with how it used to
Likely causes
- The inlet manifold is packed with hard carbon that has narrowed the passages
- The EGR valve is stuck open by soot and is feeding exhaust in continuously
- Short, cold, urban journeys never get the engine hot enough to keep the deposits down
- Something else in the air path — filter, intercooler pipe, hose — is restricting or leaking
Diagnostic steps

- Be honest about the journeys the truck actually does, because that is what predicts this problemPoints toShort, cold, urban journeys never get the engine hot enough to keep the deposits down

Fix paths
Professional inlet and recirculation clean
$$–$$$Difficulty 4/5
The manifold comes off and gets cleaned properly. Doing it without cleaning or replacing the valve at the same time leaves the source of the soot bolted to the clean part.
Replace the EGR valve
$$Difficulty 3/5
If the valve will not seat after cleaning, it is a replacement. A Costa Rican counter catalogues this part category, which is worth knowing before anybody quotes you an import — though the listing is a quote request, not a stock check.
Give the truck regular long runs
$Difficulty 1/5
Free, and the only thing on this page that slows the deposit down instead of removing it after the fact. It pairs with the particulate filter entry for this generation, which wants the same change for the same reason.
Restore the air path
$Difficulty 2/5
A new air filter and a proper look at the intercooler pipework. Cheap, quick, and the thing to eliminate before paying for a manifold clean you may not need.
