A rear drawer turns a boot full of loose boxes into something you can find things in at night, and it is genuinely the modification people regret least. It is also heavy before it holds anything: the unit cited below publishes its own weight, its external footprint, its usable internal space and its rated load, and the gap between the external and internal dimensions is the price of the slides and the frame. Set that unit weight against the difference between the curb weight and the gross weight in the second citation — that difference is the entire payload of the vehicle, and it is the same budget the passengers, the fuel, the roof load and the second battery are all drawing on.

What it needs first

Nothing else has to be done first.

What it breaks or affects

Everything below is a consequence of fitting this, not a reason against it. Read it before you buy, not after.

SystemConsequenceWhat happens
SuspensionHas to be resetThe drawer's own weight is in the first citation and it is charged against the vehicle's payload — the difference between curb and gross weight in the second — before you put a single tool in it. The spring supplier cited below bands its springs by added constant weight, and a permanently-installed drawer is exactly that, even though the supplier's own accessory examples do not name one. Make the spring decision, in the linked entry, with the drawer already on the list.Modificationgen3-suspension-lift-springs
Interior and trimGets worseThe external dimensions in the first citation are what the drawer occupies permanently, and the internal dimensions are what you get back. The floor is now higher, tall items travel on top of the unit, and the space a third-row seat used to fold into is where the drawer lives.

The honest tradeoffs

Read the drawer's own load rating carefully: it says how much the drawer can hold, not how much the truck can carry, and those are different questions with different answers. Every kilo of drawer is permanent, sits behind the rear axle, and is exactly the kind of added constant weight the spring supplier cited below asks about when it recommends a spring — a drawer plus armour plus a bumper is how a truck ends up sitting on its bump stops with nothing in it. You also lose the flat floor and a chunk of height: the external envelope in the first citation is the space the drawer occupies whether or not you fill it, and anything tall now travels on top of the drawer rather than on the floor. A drawer and a folded third-row seat want the same floor, so if the truck is a seven-seater, work out where the seats are going to live before you order rather than after. Finally, weight distribution moves rearwards, which changes how the truck behaves loaded — one more reason the spring choice is made after the accessories are chosen, not before, which is the linked entry.
